Imperial Vienna
(Daily excursion possible)
The architecture of the former Danube monarchy shapes the appearance of the city: splendid buildings of all epochs and the generous overall layout of the city still lets the visitor revel in the time of the romantic Imperial city.
For over 600 years, the Vienna Hofburg was the residence of Habsburg line. The original castle was rebuilt several times in the course of the centuries and extended to become a truly impressive building complex with 18 sections and nearly 2600 rooms altogether. Court ceremony accordingly allocated an apartment to each member of the Imperial family. Today the majority of the buildings accommodate ministries, offices, museums and the president’s chancellery. Of the former Imperial apartments, today, 22 administrative and living quarters in which the Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Elizabeth (Sisi) lived can be visited. These are in the state chancellery section and in the Amalienburg and were mainly used during the winter months. The Imperial couple spent the summer in Schönbrunn and various other country seats.
