Places of interest in Vienna
As a World Cultural Heritage site, Vienna is home to a wealth of places of interest. The absolute must for every visitor to Vienna is without a doubt St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the heart of the city. From its tower, you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city of Vienna and numerous other places of interest – for example the Hofburg Palace, where Sisi once lived, as well as the well-known Spanish Riding School, where the Lipizzaner horses are trained. Close to the Hofburg, there are also the Imperial Crypt (Kaisergruft) and the Capuchin Crypt (Kapuzinergruft).
Many other hotspots are grouped around the Ring, the grand street which surrounds the 1st District: the Museums of Art and Natural History, the Austrian Parliament, the Rathaus (town hall) and the Albertina museum. The best way to traverse the Ring is to sit in one of the trams (lines 1 or 2) which circle the Ring all day long and will give you a perfect sightseeing tour of Vienna. You should stop to admire the Vienna State Opera opposite the Hotel Sacher. The well-known Vienna Opera Ball takes place here every year, the premier social event in Vienna.
In front of the gates of Vienna, there is the breathtakingly beautiful Schönbrunn Palace with the Schönbrunn Zoo – a particular attraction for families. Here you’ll walk in a centuries-old park and probably soon feel like an emperor yourself! Then there’s a wild experience for children: the Prater, an amusement park whose emblem is the giant Ferris wheel. It’s also recommended for adults – there is hardly a more beautiful panoramic view of Vienna.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Prince Eugene of Savoy originally planned the Belvedere as a garden palace. But there’s nothing modest about the imperial palace, which consists of the Upper and the Lower Belvedere in addition to a grand park: The palace is lavishly adorned and houses important artistic treasures from the Austrian Republic. Since 1903 the Belvedere Galleries have also been accommodated in the palace’s impressive rooms.
In 1955 a historic event took place here, when the treaty ending the occupation after World War II was signed at the Belvedere Palace. The gallery is well-known far beyond Austria’s borders, most especially because it is home to significant works of Gustav Klimt.St. Charles's Church (Karlskirche)
